Throughout January and February 2019, Elvis Express Radio will be celebrating
the 50th Anniversary of Elvis' historic return to his home City of Memphis for his
first recording sessions since his time at SUN Records in 1955.

Opened in 1967, American Sound Studios would produce around 120 hit songs
and were listed in the Hot 100 of Billboard charts.

At one point, during a one week period, 25% of the Billboard Hot 100 were not
only recorded in the Memphis Studio, but they all featured the same musicians,
known as the 'Memphis Boys' who played on the recordings of a variety of artists
including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Neil Diamond and many
others.

In fact the Memphis Boys played on 122 Top 10 records using the same rhythm
team, and were also known as the “827 Thomas Street Band” after the address
of the studio. And all of this in just 5 short years.

American Sound Studio folded in 1972 and the building was torn down in 1989.

In January and February 1969, Elvis Presley recorded an extensive number of
tracks during a period known as his comeback.

One notable track, and the first to be released, was "In the Ghetto", unusual in
Elvis' repertoire for its social commentary on the cycle of crime and poverty,
followed by Suspicious Minds, which became a centerpiece of his live
performances that would begin that year.
Indeed, four charting singles came from these sessions - "Suspicious Minds", "Don't Cry Daddy", "In the Ghetto", and "Kentucky Rain" - as well as two critically acclaimed
albums released during 1969,
From Elvis in Memphis and the studio portion of From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis, also the arrangements and strings Horns
were scored at American East Studio the annex of American Sound Studios North 827 Thomas st. .

Mike Leach , Glen Spreen, to handle the studio deadlines of RCA and Chips Momen to sweeting of the tracks with the stereo echo chambers at the Deadrick American East .

Many of the unreleased songs were later reissued in
Back in Memphis in 1970. Additional tracks recorded during the 1969 sessions would continue to appear haphazardly on
assorted Elvis albums as late as 1972, including a cover version of The Beatles'
"Hey Jude".

HOW ELVIS RECORDED BACK IN MEMPHIS
It was January 9th 1969, the day after his 34th birthday when Producer, Felton Jarvis visited Elvis at Graceland. The two sat in the den (now known as the jungle room) discussing
what direction to take the next recording session, scheduled to take place in Nashville and one that RCA had hope that on the back of the critically celebrated Singer TV Special
broadcast on NBC just a month before, would produce a couple of Hits, maybe even a number one?

Longtime friend of Elvis, Marty Lacker was also present at the Graceland meeting that evening, and as he listened to Elvis and Felton discuss music ideas and dates for the
Nashville Session, He was getting more and more frustrated at what he was hearing.

As Marty told us here at Elvis Express Radio, "I didn't realize I was doing it, but Apparently my head shaking side to side as I got more and more annoyed at hearing what Felton
was saying to Elvis".  Marty had a rather, shall we say, large, round and bald head which is why Elvis gave him the nickname of "Moon".  Anyway, Marty could not hide the
frustration he had for his friends career.

Elvis, noticing Marty's head shaking and almost telepathic moaning and cursing, snapped at him, "what the hell is your problem?" Marty remembered thinking to himself, 'I gotta
say something, I gotta do this'! So Marty turns to Elvis and Felton and asked "Why not give Chips Moman and his Rhythm Section, they're really good Elvis, and all the top acts
want to record with them and they're right here in Memphis."  The reply from Elvis was, 'Well, maybe someday"?

Well, to cut a long story short, Elvis did come round to Marty's way of thinking rather quickly, in fact, so quickly that he told Marty "I have to start the session Monday night. You
and Felton set it up with Chips Moman'.   So, Marty and Felton  made the call to Chips where Marty asked, "Do you still want to cut Elvis'? 'Hell yeah' Chips replied.

"Well you got him. He has to start Monday night."  But, Neil Diamond was already booked in the studio for then, but Chips Moman had a solution to the problem, "Fuck Neil
Diamond, he'll just have to be postponed. Tell Elvis he's on'.

The Rest as they say....Is History!

Elvis Express Radio will be marking the 50th Anniversary of these historic recordings throughout January and February as we celebrate the amazing talent of Elvis Aaron Presley.
