TROY, N.Y. >> Local rockers are paying tribute to The King this weekend in honor of his 82nd birthday.

While many music-lovers still mourn the death of Elvis Presley, some area fans have an annual celebration to honor his long-lasting musical legacy.

Each year around Presley’s birthday, which is Jan. 8, local artist Johnny Rabb and fellow area musicians throw an Elvis Presley Birthday Bash.

This year, they are honoring what would be The King’s 82nd birthday.

The event will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at The Hangar, located at 675 River St. in Troy.

Sautrday’s lineup includes Johnny Rabb’s Big Band featuring The Tichy Boys, along with other special guests.

None of the performers are Elvis impersonators, just Elvis enthusiasts with a great love for his music from throughout the years.

The band will play a variety of favorite Presley tunes like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “Heartbreak Hotel,” from throughout the King’s different eras and genres.

“It’s a hodgepodge of rock ‘n’ roll, country western, dixieland and R&B,” explained Rabb, who said he has always been an Elvis fan though he typically plays a different style of

Whether show-goers are into Presley’s rockabilly material or his soulful love songs, fans will hear it all at this annual tribute show.

“We’re celebrating Elvis’ 82nd birthday, and we are the only tribute to Elvis in the Capital Region this January,” Rabb said. “One date, one place - Elvis fans unite and won’t be

This Capital Region tradition was started around 1980. Since an inaugural event at Pauly’s Hotel in Albany, “It just kind of grew from there,” Rabb said. “We just kept doing it and it
kept growing.”

Over the years the lineup has changed and the event has moved between different locations, but the reason remains the same: to commend the King of rock ‘n’ roll. “We do it as a
celebration,” Rabb said.

The party’s latest home, The Hangar has “ a very good vibe” with a funky feel and open layout said Rabb, a Waterford native.

No matter how the times or venues change, Rabb said, “There are always Elvis fans.”

So, each year Rabb and his buddies take the stage for another tribute to The King.

Admission to this year’s Elvis Presley Birthday Bash is $10 per person at the door.
