January 04, 2016 Texarkana, / Elvis Express Radio
Texarkana, Ark., will celebrate the iconic "King of Rock 'n' Roll" Elvis Presley at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the American Music Awards Walk of Fame next to City Hall.
Mayor Ruth Penney-Bell and members of the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium Commission will dedicate a plaque to Elvis on Jan. 8, which would have been his 81st birthday. The
King died on Aug. 16, 1977. The plaque will commemorate performances by Elvis at the Municipal Auditorium in 1954 and 1955.
"I've heard people say he had so many fond memories of Texarkana and the many times he had been here and how he hated to stop touring," Penney-Bell said regarding
comments she has heard about Elvis
over the years.
Eric Ethridge, the city's media manager, said anyone who is interested in Elvis is welcome to attend the ceremony and celebrate the musician whose music changed Rock 'n' Roll.
"We want to celebrate Elvis' history at the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium," Ethridge said. "There are three or four confirmed dates when he played there and some believe he might
have played there more
Ethridge said Mark Shoptaw, a historian and member of the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium Commission, had the idea to dedicate this plaque to Elvis.
