Back in 2013, Elvis Matters announced that a new statue was to be commissioned depicting the moment on May 17th 1956, a 21 year old Elvis Presley and a 10 year old John
Wilkinson met for the very first time. This meeting would be the first in a series of events that would incredibly lead to Elvis personally phoning John 12 years later in 1968, offering
him the job as his Rhythm Guitar player for a band his was putting together in order to return to live shows. John agreed and would go on to remain a loyal TCB band member &
friend never missing a single live concert from 1969 up until Elvis' death in 1977.
The plan was to unveil the life-size statue on May 17th 2016 during a ceremony to commemorated that first meeting 60 years ago to the day at the Shrine Auditorium Mosque in
John' home town of Springfield, Missouri.
Now, 2 years on, "due to circumstances", which have not yet been announced, and the "high cost of [the] statue", the organisers at Elvis Matters have announced that the project
can "unfortunately not be completed".
But all is not lost, the sculptor is presenting his maquette, a small scale rough draft model of the unfinished sculpture (shown above) to John's former school, the Greenwood
Labatory School at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, on October 17th where it will be permanently displayed in memory of John.
January 11th 2013, John Wilkinson, one of the true "Legends" of the Elvis world and wonderful friend, a genuine gentleman and a dear and much loved friend lost his long term
battle against Cancer and sadly died at the age of just 67.
