Around the world, there are many memorials, statues and tributes to Elvis and for anyone not aware, Australia has one of the most unusual of these, in the form of a full headstone
located at the Melbourne General Cemetery in Melbourne, Australia.
Not only is it one of the grandest looking plots in the entire graveyard, but since 1977 it has been the most visited grave in the cemetery, attracting thousands of Elvis fans each
year who lay their individual tributes etc.
The King’s memorial tombstone stands tall in a lovingly landscaped stone grotto, surrounded by ferns and succulents. Hand-etched portraits, flowers, plush toys and roses are often
left in his honour (especially around his birthday in January and the anniversary of his death in August). Not bad for a performer who never even toured the Country! Commissioned
by Victoria’s Elvis Presley fan club and unveiled by Australia’s own rock’n’roll rebel Johnny O’Keefe, this memorial is strangely touching.
Now, obviously, Elvis had never set foot in Australia, let alone Melbourne – though his one of a kind Cadillac, which had a paint work made up of crushed diamonds and fish scales
once made a tour Down Under, without its owner. Nevertheless this lavish memorial to the King was erected by the local fan club shortly after his death in 1977, A stone grotto is
crowned with succulents perhaps reminiscent of Memphis Tennessee, and every year on his birthday his mourners come to leave tributes.
The memorial was commissioned by the President of the Elvis Presley Fan Club of Australia in November 1977. It is believed to be the only one of it's type in Australia and draws
1,000s of visitors each year on the anniversary of the King's death (16th August 1977).
